- The process of changing an electronic
file of content from one format to another (ie, changing a
word processing document to an XML-tagged document).
- The translation of data from one
format to another. ARC/INFO supports data conversion from
many geographic data formats such as DLG, TIGER, DXF, and
DEM.
- Converting data from one format to
another. Conversion typically falls into three basic
categories. 1. To convert to a form usable by the equipment
you have, eg you convert some data from tape to disk
(because you don’t have a tape drive). 2. Or you may convert
from one method of encoding data to another, say from EBCDIC
to ASCII, because you don’t have software, which can
understand IBM’s EBCDIC method of coding. 3. Or you may
convert from one format to another, eg from the dBASE method
of encoding databases to the Paradox method, or from
- Altering or changing data. This can
include translating it into a different format, taking out
extraneous data, and restructuring data.
- Changing digital data from one format
to another so it can be used in another software application
or printed on a specific output device. (Eg, CMYK to RGB,
TIF to GIF, MS Word to Postscript, etc.).
- The process of changing data from one
physical environment to another. This process makes any
changes necessary to move data from one electronic medium or
database product to another.
- conversion from one way of encoding
data to another way
